Skincare is an essential part of our daily routine, and achieving glowing skin is a goal for many. One of the key ingredients in achieving this goal is hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies that helps keep our skin hydrated and plump. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of hyaluronic acid for the skin and how to make a DIY hyaluronic acid serum at home!
Introduction to Hyaluronic Acid and its Benefits for Skin
Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is naturally found in our bodies, particularly in our skin, joints, and eyes. It is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture. In our skin, hyaluronic acid helps to keep it hydrated, plump, and youthful-looking. As we age, our bodies produce less hyaluronic acid, which can lead to dry, dull, and wrinkled skin.
Using hyaluronic acid in skincare can help to combat these signs of aging. It can improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and increase skin elasticity. Hyaluronic acid is also suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, as it is gentle and non-irritating.
Understanding the Science behind DIY Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Hyaluronic acid serum works by attracting and retaining moisture in the skin. When applied topically, it forms a barrier on the skin’s surface, preventing moisture loss and keeping the skin hydrated. This can help to improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and increase skin elasticity.
Making a DIY hyaluronic acid serum is a good option as it allows you to control the ingredients and customize the serum to your skin’s needs. It is also cost-effective and easy to make at home.

Ingredients Required for Making Hyaluronic Acid Serum at Home
To make a DIY hyaluronic acid serum, you will need the following ingredients:
– Hyaluronic acid powder
– Distilled water
– Vegetable glycerin
– Aloe vera gel
– Vitamin E oil
Each ingredient has its benefits. Hyaluronic acid powder is the star ingredient and helps to hydrate and plump the skin. Distilled water is used to dissolve the hyaluronic acid powder. Vegetable glycerin is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin. Aloe vera gel is soothing and hydrating, while vitamin E oil is an antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from damage.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Hyaluronic Acid Serum
To make a DIY hyaluronic acid serum, follow these steps:
1. In a small bowl, mix 1/4 teaspoon of hyaluronic acid powder (approx. 2 capsules worth) with 2 tablespoons of distilled water. Stir until the powder is completely dissolved.
2. In a separate bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of vegetable glycerin, 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel, and 1/4 teaspoon of vitamin E oil.
3. Add the hyaluronic acid mixture to the glycerin mixture and stir well.
4. Transfer the serum to a dark glass bottle with a dropper.
5. Important: Store in the refrigerator to prevent spoilage. If you prefer to keep it at room temperature, you can add 1/2 tsp vitamin C powder and 2 drop rosemary essential oils to the mixture as natural preservatives.***
***If using this method, be sure to only apply the serum at night to avoid sun sensitivity that is common with Vitamin C application during the daytime.

I’m excited to try your recipe Megan! I’m curious if you have seen any separation of the Vitamin E with water based ingredients in your serum? Do you just give it a shake before using?
Hi Nigella,
Great question! I have noticed that in warmer temperatures this can occur sometimes. You can give the bottle a good shake before opening it to help remedy this. If you find this troublesome, you can definitely omit the oil and the serum will still work its magic! 🙂

Hi Meagan,
How long will this serum keep without any preservatives? I’d prefer to keep it in my medicine cabinet but understand that when an ingredient contains water there’s a need to preserve it. I’d rather not have to mix a new batch every week. Your thoughts please?
Hi Sandra,
Great question! Since I use this daily it gets used up fairly quickly, so I have not noticed any degradation or spoilage when kept at normal room temperatures.
Some sources say you could refrigerate this if you are concerned, but that it does not need to be refrigerated to retain quality. Other sources say that room temp DIY serum’s effectiveness wanes after 1 week without adding Vitamin C as a preservative. Though, if you choose to add a touch of Vitamin C to yours, note that people report using this only at night to avoid potential sun damage from day wear.
I hope this helps!

Thanks very much for your prompt reply Meagen. I’ve used HA serums before with great results, but with serious budget restraints these days I’ve decided to look into making my own. I really enjoy crafting and DIY, so I’m excited to give this a go. I know it’s not difficult at all, and as long as I can expect a reasonable longevity of the serum I’m sure I’ll be very happy. Thanks for sharing all your good info.
Can this be incorporated into a lip gloss recipe? Is there another preservative besides vitamin c that can be used?
Hi Sheri!
This is not something I’ve attempted at home, but from doing a quick search, it seems that an oil-based HA might be necessary for incorporating into lip balms.

Hi, you say that you can add a few drops on moisturizer. How many drops are “a few drops”?
Also, what ratio should you use in doing this?
Hi Duane,
Great question! A would add 3-5 drops of serum to the amount of moisturizer you would normally use for one application. 🙂
